A six-mile stretch of Chiniak Highway will carry the most severe seasonal weight restriction in the Kodiak road system starting Monday at 8 a.m., according to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.

The restriction limits vehicles to 50% of legal allowable weight on Chiniak Highway from milepost 25.7 to 31.8. That is the lowest threshold imposed anywhere in the Kodiak area this season.

Pasagshak Road received a lighter restriction of 75% of legal weight across its entire 15.7-mile length, from milepost 0.0 to 15.7.

Normal summer restrictions apply to all other state-maintained roads in the Kodiak area.

Kodiak is one of several Southcoast Region road systems covered by the seasonal weight restriction notice.

Erik Norberg, maintenance and operations specialist for the DOT&PF Southcoast Region, issued the public notice. The Department of Public Safety and the DOT&PF Division of Measurement and Standards and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement will enforce the restrictions.

Weight restrictions are stated as a percentage of legal allowable weight and apply to the maximum axle loading under 17 AAC 25.013(e).

DOT&PF said additional restrictions and modifications will be imposed as necessary.

Authorized weight restrictions are posted only on the DOT&PF Division of Measurement and Standards and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement webpage at http://www.dot.alaska.gov/mscve/index.cfm. Weight restrictions posted on 511 or any other source are for information only. The most recent published public notice supersedes any conflicting information from other sources.

Norberg can be reached at 907-465-1011 or [email protected].
