Koniag subsidiaries won $58.5 million to run IT for the agency that runs 8(a)

Three subsidiaries of Koniag, the Alaska Native regional corporation for Kodiak, won $58.5 million in federal information technology contracts in two days this month. All of it is to serve the Small Business Administration, the agency that runs the preference program the awards came through.

Koniag Operations Services took $23.7 million on Sept. 9 for enterprise security and identity services. The day before, Koniag Professional Services took $21 million for customer-relationship-management integration and a data platform, and Koniag Advisory and Business Solutions took $13.9 million for digital workplace and governance. All three came through the General Services Administration, run about a year into September 2027, and are performed in Washington, D.C.

Each was an 8(a) sole-source award, not available for competition, with one offer received. The 8(a) program is the SBA's own vehicle for steering set-aside and sole-source work to certified disadvantaged firms, and Alaska Native corporation subsidiaries qualify. In this case the SBA is buying its own systems through it.

Mike Torres of Huna Totem Corporation described the environment at a Resource Development Council forum in May, pointing to executive orders that have pushed toward consolidation and "having procurements run through GSA." He said Native contractors deliver value to shareholders and to Alaska communities.

Koniag subsidiaries have picked up smaller federal work this fall as well: about $975,000 across three State Department inspector general support contracts, $1.35 million from USDA's Rural Housing Service for cybersecurity, and roughly $2.06 million from the Social Security Administration for print services.
