Kasilof sexual abuse suspect dies by suicide before troopers arrive

A man under investigation for allegedly sexually abusing a minor in Kasilof died Thursday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He died before Alaska State Troopers investigators arrived at his home.

Troopers received a report in July alleging the sexual abuse of a minor. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation took the case and began investigating the allegation.

On Aug. 13, 2026, investigators learned the man had confessed to a relative and then made suicidal statements, according to the dispatch. Investigators went immediately to his residence. They found him dead when they arrived. Troopers said he had died before their arrival and did not release his name.

His body was sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy. His next of kin have been notified. The dispatch carries the standard notice that any charges reported in such releases are accusations and that defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. It does not state whether charges were filed in this case.

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse has said that a suspect's death does not erase the harm caused by alleged abuse or the need for support for the affected family.

Firearms were involved in 63% of Alaska suicide deaths recorded between 2012 and 2017, according to an Alaska Violent Death Reporting System bulletin from the state Section of Epidemiology. The bulletin recorded 1,103 suicides in Alaska over that period, accounting for 69% of all violent deaths statewide. It found suicide was the leading cause of death for Alaskans aged 10 to 64 during those years.

Suicide Awareness Voices of Education says crisis responses should prioritize de-escalation and mental health support. The organization advises anyone in immediate danger to call 911.
