The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is spending a Saturday next month teaching women how to hunt Dall sheep and mountain goats.

The Mountain Huntress Clinic, Nov. 7 at Rabbit Creek Shooting Park in Anchorage, is a full day of hands-on activities and costs $55. Registration is open, 19 spots remain, and participants need hunter education certification. It's part of the last round of Anchorage classes this year from Becoming an Outdoors-Woman, the department's outdoor skills program aimed at women.

The program started in 1991 at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where its first workshop drew more than 100 women and quickly filled, according to the university. It now runs in more than 30 states and five Canadian provinces.

In Alaska, Fish and Game runs it with the Outdoor Heritage Foundation of Alaska, and participants have ranged in age from 18 to 85. The classes are aimed at women, though the department says men are welcome, and people who haven't taken a BOW class before get priority.

Nationally, women made up 22% of hunters in 2022, about 3.1 million people, according to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service survey.

The rest of the Anchorage schedule:

  • Handgun Fit and Function, Nov. 13, $165. Seven spots left; hunter education required.

  • Shotgun Cleaning, Dec. 1, $10. Registration opens Nov. 2.

  • Rifle Cleaning, Dec. 9, $10. Registration opens Nov. 9.

  • Archery 101, for beginners without their own gear, Dec. 15 at Full Curl Archery, $25. Registration opens Nov. 15.
