Fairbanks wilderness first aid class opens registration Oct. 1

Registration for a Fairbanks wilderness first aid class for women opens Thursday, Oct. 1, at 9 a.m. The course trains for injuries where evacuation is delayed and care stretches on.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game's Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program runs the class Thursday, Nov. 5, and Friday, Nov. 6, from 5 to 9 p.m. both days at ADF&G in Fairbanks. It costs $125, which includes certification. Participants must be 18 or older.

The department describes the eight-hour course as geared toward prolonged care and delayed evacuations, using wilderness training scenarios. It covers prevention, assessment and treatment of environmental illnesses, stabilizing life-threatening trauma, and managing a wilderness emergency.

Five other Fairbanks classes already have open registration, including a concealed carry course Oct. 24 and 25 for $215 and Handgun Fit and Foundations Oct. 26 for $165. Both require Hunter Education certification; the Fairbanks Hunter Education class, $29, runs Nov. 21, after both.

Alaska's program began in 1995 at Chena Hot Springs, according to ADF&G. Sign-up is at bow.adfg.alaska.gov.
