A driver struck and killed a man crossing East 15th Avenue at Medfra Street in Anchorage on Tuesday morning, the Anchorage Police Department said.

Officers responded at about 7:53 am, and Anchorage Fire Department medics pronounced the man dead at the scene, according to the police department's report. The driver, an adult man in a GMC Yukon, stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. No charges have been filed.

Police will release the man's name once his next of kin are notified. They are asking anyone with surveillance footage or other information who hasn't spoken with officers to contact them.

In August, a woman was killed at the Seward Highway and Benson Boulevard by a driver who didn't stop, Alaska News reported.

Ninety-two pedestrians died in Anchorage from 2016 through 2025, according to a state epidemiology bulletin published in April. The highest death rate came in 2025, with 15 deaths, or 5.18 per 100,000 people. The deaths were concentrated in Midtown, East downtown and two intersections along C Street. September had more deaths than any other month.

The bulletin called roadway safety improvements and enforcement against impaired and illegal driving important ways to reduce the risk to pedestrians.

Gov. Mike Dunleavy proclaimed October Pedestrian Safety Month in Alaska on Oct. 1, pointing to a state transportation department fund for quick, low-cost safety fixes and the state's support for the national "Towards Zero Deaths" initiative.
