Alaska streamlines the fall round of its $272 million rural health fund

Rural health organizations applying for a share of Alaska's big federal health fund this fall will have an easier time of it: one application instead of two, and less than half the wait to see money.

The Alaska Department of Health is aiming to open the fall round of its Rural Health Transformation Program in late September or early October, and to get from application to the first awards in about 11 weeks — down from the 24 the first cycle took. "This means we're targeting about 11 weeks from application opening to awards beginning," the department's Betsy Wood said Friday, with the window open about four weeks and review taking another four or so. No firm opening date is set yet.

The program is Alaska's slice of a $50 billion national fund Congress created in 2025, and the state's first-year award was $272.2 million. That first cycle drew an enormous response — nearly 1,800 submissions — which the state acknowledges it invited. "We cast a really broad net and there was a large response," Commissioner Heidi Hedberg said. Awards have reached about $207 million across 217 projects so far, led by health-care access, telehealth and technology, leaving roughly $65 million still to be handed out before the first-year budget period ends in late October.

The fall round keeps an open call across all six of the program's initiatives but flags a few priorities for year two — among them care coordination and emergency medical services. Requests for facility construction and renovation are being pushed to a spring cycle, because federal rules cap that category, and organizations that need multiyear funding will have to reapply then.

Organizations can submit up to five applications, and smaller planning-stage projects under $250,000 get a shortened form. The department is holding a year-two kickoff Sept. 23 in Anchorage, with a virtual option.
