Alaska has drawn $15.7 billion in federal money this year

The federal government has committed $15.72 billion to Alaska so far this fiscal year, about $21,000 for every person in the state.

That puts Alaska 45th among the 50 states and six territories, between Hawaii and New Hampshire. Of the total, $10.72 billion has actually been paid out.

The money arrives three ways. Direct payments to individuals account for $6.53 billion, grants for $5.82 billion, and contracts for $3.33 billion.

The pace is picking up. Federal databases logged 19,608 awards to Alaska as of Sunday, 572 more than six days earlier.

But a different measure of the same money points down. Tracking spending by where the work is performed, the last three months brought $4.13 billion to Alaska, down 15.7 percent from the $4.90 billion in the three months before that.

Both numbers describe work done in Alaska. The first is a running total for the year, which only climbs. The second is a rolling three-month window, which can fall while the annual figure grows.
