Alaska's federal obligations are down 1.7% this year, and September has barely started

Federal obligations recorded against Alaska, measured by where work was performed, total $3.27 billion over the trailing three months ending Sept. 11, down from $4.79 billion prior, according to USAspending.gov monthly tracking. Obligations are commitments, not payments.

The window ends 11 days into September, normally the federal year's biggest month. Obligations peaked at $2.31 billion in July, fell to $873.62 million in August, and stand at $90.27 million for September so far, likely to rise. Last September brought $2.23 billion. Counting complete months only, obligations through August total $15.95 billion, down 1.7% from a year earlier.

A separate measure of prime awards, excluding subawards, to Alaska-based recipients shows $16.29 billion across 20,427 awards fiscal-year-to-date, ranking Alaska 45th of 56 states and territories.

University of Alaska Anchorage economists told a Commonwealth North forum in June that federal spending contributed nearly $9 billion of Alaska's $16.5 billion in GDP growth between 2015 and 2023.
