As deep-sea mining interest grows worldwide, marine researchers have pushed back on treating these mineral-rich crusts as mere ore — arguing the ferromanganese formations are habitat, home to sponges and corals that took millennia to grow. The same seafloor features that hold the minerals are the ones that hold the life, which is precisely why what's down there is worth mapping before anyone decides what to do with it.
