A cabin fire spread into a small wildfire north of Fairbanks

A cabin fire near the Chatanika River north of Fairbanks spread into surrounding wildlands Sunday evening, growing into a quarter-acre wildfire.

Callers reported it near Mile 46.5 around 6 p.m., the Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection said. Two smokejumpers worked to contain the blaze, named the Shovel Fire, and monitored it overnight as more resources headed in.

The Chatanika corridor holds cabins and subdivisions that have faced wildfire evacuation alerts before. Forestry did not say whether any structures were threatened Sunday.
