Wind advisory holds for Anchorage Hillside with 60 mph gusts through 10 a.m. Tuesday

Gusts of up to 60 mph are forecast for the Anchorage Hillside and the Seward Highway near Turnagain Arm. The wind advisory covering them remains in effect until 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The National Weather Service in Anchorage issued the advisory Sunday at 11:21 a.m. It took effect at 8 p.m. that evening and covers Anchorage, Eagle River, Eklutna, Anchorage Hillside, Indian and Upper Eagle River.

Southeast winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected along the Hillside and the Seward Highway stretch near Turnagain Arm. West and South Anchorage face winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 40 to 50 mph. Midtown and downtown Anchorage are expected to see weaker winds.

"Secure belongings. Power outages possible," the weather service said in a post Sunday. Winds are expected to diminish Tuesday morning.

The wind comes at the tail end of two days of heat advisories across Southcentral, and the two briefly overlapped. The wind advisory began at 8 p.m. Sunday, while the Copper River Valley heat advisory ran until 9 p.m. that evening. The Anchorage-area heat advisory expired Saturday evening, with forecast highs of 72 to 80 degrees. The separate advisory for the Central and Southern Copper Valley and McCarthy forecast temperatures as high as 82.
