Washington Man Cited for Keeping Snagged Sockeye on Russian River

Alaska Wildlife Troopers cited Marco Maynard, 36, of Washington state, on the Russian River on June 19 at approximately 8:55 p.m. after an investigation found he had retained a snagged sockeye salmon. Snagging is prohibited on the Russian River. Troopers issued Maynard a strict liability citation for the fishing violation; under Alaska law, strict liability offenses do not require the state to prove criminal intent for a citation to stand.

Charges reported in the dispatch are accusations. Maynard is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
