Unit 22C bull moose season closes 12 days early, after two days

Bull moose season in Unit 22C on the Seward Peninsula lasted two days. It opened Sept. 1 and closes at the end of Wednesday, Sept. 2, twelve days ahead of the scheduled Sept. 14 close, because the season's 30-bull quota is expected to be met. The closure applies to residents and nonresidents alike.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced it from Nome. The Board of Game set up the RM840 registration hunt with a quota to prevent overharvest, and the department landed on 30 bulls after a population estimate and bull-to-cow ratios that met its management objectives. Area wildlife biologist Sara Henslee signed the order. Everything else in Unit 22's moose regulations stays as it is.

It is the second RM840 area to close in a week. The resident hunt in Unit 22D Remainder ended Aug. 28 when that area's 17-bull quota was expected to fill.

A year ago the department closed Unit 22C on the same date, Sept. 2, against a quota of 25.

RM840 remains open through Sept. 14 in Unit 22B west of the Darby Mountains, Unit 22D Kuzitrin Drainage and Unit 22D Southwest.
