Hunters near Nome have one last day for a bull moose before the season closes early

Resident hunters with a registration permit for the area outside Nome known as Unit 22D Remainder have one more day to take a bull moose. The season closes at 11:59 pm Friday — more than two weeks early — because the area's fall quota of 17 bulls is expected to be filled by then, and Fish and Game says no further harvest is warranted.

This has happened before. The department has capped bull harvest in this area for years to protect the herd, after surveys found the ratio of bulls to cows had fallen below management goals, and it has closed 22D Remainder early in both 2020 and 2025, each time on the same 17-bull limit. Nonresidents have no open season in the area at all.

Hunters who haven't filled a permit still have other options nearby: parts of Units 22B and 22C, and the Kuzitrin and Southwest areas, open Sept. 1 through 14 unless they close early too. Each permit allows one moose per household.
