President Donald Trump said in a Leif Erikson Day message Friday that a security deal he signed with Denmark and Greenland last month gives the United States "permanent control over security in Greenland."

Trump signed the agreement with Denmark's and Greenland's prime ministers in New York in September. It cites Golden Dome, the missile defense system that includes Alaska's Fort Greely and Clear Space Force Station.

The published agreement text amends the 1951 U.S.-Denmark Defense Agreement on Greenland. It takes effect only after Denmark and Greenland complete parliamentary procedures and notify each other diplomatically. It has no end date and can be changed only if both sides agree.

"I did what no President in the last 100 years was willing to do," Trump said, adding that the deal made "the Arctic a pillar of American strength once again."

Greenland's government describes the deal differently. Its fact sheet says the agreement "recognizes Greenland as equal" and that any new U.S. defense areas need approval from both Greenland and Denmark.
