Troopers say 16-year-old shot and killed a family member near Slipper Lake in Sutton

A 16-year-old is being held at the Mat-Su Youth Facility after Alaska State Troopers said the teen shot and killed a family member near Slipper Lake in the Sutton area on Saturday.

Troopers identified the man who died as Daniel Gunderson, 47, of Palmer. He had multiple gunshot wounds, according to the troopers' report.

Troopers were called at 5:32 pm Saturday after a man was found dead near the lake. Investigators from the Alaska Bureau of Investigation took over the case and identified a family member as a person of interest.

According to troopers, a preliminary investigation found that the teen had been out recreating with Gunderson when the teen intentionally shot him multiple times. The teen then left in Gunderson's truck and drove to Seward, where the teen called 911 and was detained by Seward police, troopers said.

The teen is being held on juvenile criminal charges, and troopers said more charges are expected as the investigation continues. Troopers have not named the teen, who is a minor, or said what the charges are.

Under Alaska law, a 16- or 17-year-old charged with the most serious crimes against a person, such as murder, is prosecuted in adult court rather than the juvenile system. Troopers have not announced any charges of that kind.

Gunderson's body was sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. His next of kin have been notified.
