Alaska State Troopers arrested a 52-year-old Anchor Point man for animal cruelty Friday after digging up two buried dogs and finding stab wounds to the head and neck of both, according to a trooper dispatch.

Troopers in Anchor Point received a report Friday morning of a disturbance that had already happened at a residence near Sluice Avenue. It was reported that the man had killed two dogs.

When troopers arrived, they were told the dogs had been buried. They exhumed the remains and found that both dogs had stab wounds to the head and neck area.

The man was taken to Homer Jail, where he was remanded into custody without incident.

The dispatch does not list specific charges. Under Alaska's animal cruelty statute, some cruelty offenses are class C felonies and others are class A misdemeanors. Courts can bar a convicted person from owning animals for up to 10 years.

The Department of Public Safety notes that charges in its dispatches are accusations and that defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
