Jade Fire reaches 40% containment near Ambler; Whakatna Fire controlled

Crews working the Jade Fire near Ambler are only 40% contained, and the ground they have not yet secured sits between the fire's edge and the community landfill.

Meanwhile, 22 smokejumpers freed up by progress on two fires are now working new ignitions near Ruby. Ten came from the Jade Fire, released Friday and flown to Galena before redeploying. Twelve more came from the Whakatna Fire near Galena, which was declared controlled at 8:30 p.m. Friday and will be monitored by aircraft.

The region remains dry. Cooler temperatures and scattered showers are in the forecast, but the agency said moisture recovery from incoming storms is expected to be minimal. Lightning remains possible. Residents should avoid outdoor burning and treat any spark as a potential wildfire.
