The state plans to sell Granite Construction gravel near Chickaloon, without competitive bidding

The Alaska Department of Natural Resources plans to let Granite Construction extract up to 40,000 cubic yards of sand, gravel or rock from about three acres of state land near Chickaloon, at Mile 66 of the Glenn Highway. Rather than put the material up for competitive bid, the department intends to sell it directly to Granite as a negotiated sale to a named applicant.

The notice doesn't disclose the price. Negotiated material contracts can run up to five years.

The timing and location line up with a road project Granite is already working. The company is handling a state pavement-preservation job on the Glenn Highway between mileposts 66.5 and 92, supplying thousands of tons of asphalt and riprap, and the gravel site sits right at the edge of that stretch. The notice doesn't tie the sale to that project, and the state hasn't said whether the material is bound for it.
