State disability council offers free online advocacy training Sept. 1-2

The Governor's Council on Disabilities and Special Education is holding a free two-day virtual training on self-advocacy and legislative advocacy skills, Sept. 1-2 from 10 am to 4 pm each day.

Sessions include Disability History 101, an "I Have Rights" panel, a self-advocacy experience, voting rights and access, and legislative advocacy. The training is aimed at self-advocates, families and guardians, and the professionals who serve people with disabilities.

The council is a state body in the Alaska Department of Health, and most of its members are people with intellectual or developmental disabilities or their families. Registration is free and available on the council's website.
