Families of students with disabilities can learn how to advocate at IEP meetings and how state and federal policies impact services at an event in Anchorage on May 30, 2026.

The Stone Soup Group will host its Transitions Series Finale from noon to 3:30 p.m. at 5530 E. Northern Lights Blvd. The event, titled Advocacy to the Summit, will cover how families and students can push for change while transitioning into adulthood.

Alaska News previously reported that the Governor's Council on Disabilities and Special Education has promoted Stone Soup Group transition events throughout the spring. The council is sharing information about the finale.

Stone Soup Group is a nonprofit that provides information, support, training, and resources to families caring for children with special needs in Alaska. The Transitions Series is a six-session program covering topics for students with disabilities transitioning to adulthood, including benefits, the Alaska Transition Handbook, and IEP advocacy.

The finale will address three main subjects: advocating at IEP meetings, how state and federal policies impact services, and how families, self-advocates, and students can push for change. The event will also allow attendees to meet the services and organizations that work to support people with disabilities.

The session targets students, families, and professionals working with people with disabilities. Organizers said the event will highlight advocacy at all levels from the home to the federal government. Families will hear about how to advocate for supports and create community growth and change.

The event will take place in the board room KST at the Northern Lights Boulevard location. Organizers encouraged families to bring everyone and join the finale session.

Stone Soup Group provides multiple resources for Alaska families, including the Family Resource Guide, Transition Checklist for Adulthood, Student Transition Workbook, and Paper Trail Notebook. These tools help families navigate the transition process as their children move toward adulthood.

Families interested in attending the May 30, 2026 event can register through the Stone Soup Group website. The organization posted a flyer with additional details about the Transitions Series Finale.
