Three locally drawn library cards are free at the Soldotna library through September
Soldotna library cardholders can pick up one of three limited-edition cards designed by local residents, free and first come, first served — but only through the end of September.
The designs came out of a contest the library ran this spring, with entries in three age brackets and a public vote deciding the winners. Christina Posma took the adult category. Maya S. won the youth category, for artists 12 and under, with a moose under the northern lights. Ty S. won the teen category with an outline of Alaska, mountains and the Big Dipper.
The library unveiled the cards at a Sept. 1 event that kicked off National Library Card Sign-Up Month.
New patrons need a photo ID and proof of address. Anyone who already has a card can swap it for one of the new designs at no charge.
About two dozen local businesses are offering cardholder discounts through the month, from Inkwell's Bookshop to the Pita Pit, and anyone checking out materials in September gets an entry in a month-end prize drawing — up to one a day per card.
The library logged 75,401 visits and 113,543 checkouts last year.
