Homer's library is asking the state to cover part of its internet bill

Homer's public library wants $5,130 from the state toward the cost of the free internet and Wi-Fi it offers the public. The City Council authorized the request last month.

That is less than the library got last year, $6,462, and the reason is straightforward: it is asking for 30 percent of its internet bill both times, and the bill went down.

The money comes from the Alaska State Library's Online With Libraries program, which helps cover recurring internet charges for libraries around the state. The request covers the budget year running through June 2027.

Libraries are not ranked against each other for the money, but getting it is not automatic. "Submitting a proposal does not guarantee funding or full funding," the State Library says.

The application window closed Aug. 31.
