Sitka school zone flasher on Kashevaroff Street is out of service

The school zone flasher at the top of Kashevaroff Street is out of service and will stay off until a new system is installed, the City and Borough of Sitka said Tuesday. Keet Gooshi Heen Elementary is on that street.

The city has ordered replacement equipment and expects to install it on arrival, "within the next few weeks." The school zone flashers on Edgecumbe Drive are fully operational.

"Drivers are reminded that school zone speed limits remain in effect and are legally enforceable during designated school zone hours, even when a flasher is not operating," the advisory said.

The city asks drivers to watch for pedestrians and bicycles during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up, stop for people in crosswalks, and never pass a vehicle stopped at one.
