Sitka school zone flasher on Kashevaroff Street is out of service

The school zone flasher at the top of Kashevaroff Street in Sitka — outside Keet Gooshi Heen Elementary — is out of service and will stay off until a new system is installed, the city said Tuesday. Replacement equipment is on order, with installation expected within the next few weeks. The flashers on Edgecumbe Drive are working normally.

Until the new one is in, the city reminds drivers that school zone speed limits still apply during school hours and are legally enforceable even when the flasher isn't blinking. Drivers are asked to watch for kids walking and biking during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up, stop for anyone in a crosswalk, and never pass a vehicle stopped at one.
