Sitka requires appointments for large scrap loads and vehicles at Gary Paxton yard

Hauling a big load of scrap metal to Sitka's scrap yard now takes a phone call first. The City and Borough of Sitka is requiring appointments for anything bigger than a dump-truck load of scrap or a large vehicle, effective immediately, blaming tight space and a short supply of shipping containers. Smaller loads can still show up during regular hours.

The city announced the change in an Aug. 31 notice from the administration rather than through an ordinance, and set no end date or condition for when the requirement might go away.

Anyone with a large load can book a time by calling 907-747-0549. The yard at 4655 Sawmill Creek Road stays open Tuesday through Saturday, 8 am to 4 pm, except holidays. Most scrap runs 12.67 cents a pound, billed to the customer's utility account. Public Works takes questions at 907-747-1804.
