Sitka requires appointments for large scrap loads and vehicles at Gary Paxton yard

Anyone hauling more than a dump truck load of scrap metal or a large vehicle to Sitka's Gary Paxton Industrial Park Scrap Yard must now call ahead. The City and Borough of Sitka imposed the appointment requirement effective immediately, citing limited space and a limited number of shipping containers. The requirement applies only to those loads; smaller ones can still arrive during posted hours.

The change came in a public service announcement from the city administration published Aug. 31, not an ordinance. It sets no end date and does not say what would lift the requirement.

Customers with those loads schedule by calling 907.747.0549. The yard at 4655 Sawmill Creek Road remains open Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., except observed holidays. Municipal disposal rates list most scrap at 12.67 cents per pound, charged to the customer's utility bill.
