Sitka has been renting dumpsters without a rate in code

Sitka has been providing roll-off dumpster service without any rate for it in city code. The Assembly takes up a fix Tuesday.

The ordinance would set the charge at $3,300.28 a month for a 15-yard container, with $2,640.22 for each additional pickup, starting Nov. 1. It cleared first reading 7-0 on Sept. 8.

It also creates three categories of user. Commercial customers pay the full rate. Schools, grocery stores and government sites approved as public-good users would pay only the disposal charge of about 17 cents a pound. And under a neighborhood cost-share option, 40 to 80 households could drop curbside pickup entirely and share a single container, billed to one account holder.

Municipal Administrator John Leach introduced the measure. The city contracts with Alaska Waste to run collection, the transfer station and the recycling center.

The Assembly meets at 6 pm Tuesday, with public testimony limited to three minutes a person.
