Sitka takes household hazardous waste free for two days next month, but not lithium-ion batteries

Sitka will hold its annual free household hazardous waste collection October 3 & 4, from 8am to 4pm at the Wastewater Treatment Plant, 100 Alice Loop off Airport Road.

The city will accept oils, paints, antifreeze, solvents, pesticides, lead-acid batteries and other chemicals, though lithium-ion and nickel-metal hydride batteries are excluded, with no alternative disposal site given.

Car and boat batteries can go to NAPA Auto Parts any time of year, the city says. It lists no year-round option for lithium-ion. The city also says household hazardous waste is not accepted at the Transfer Station or the Sawmill Cove Industrial Park scrap yard.

Small businesses and government agencies may participate for a fee with prior arrangement through the Public Works Office. The notice does not say what the fee is.

The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation recommends communities ship such waste out at least once a year.
