Seattle man dies after fall from boat mast in Akutan

A 36-year-old Seattle man died July 30 after falling from the mast of a boat in Akutan, the Alaska State Troopers said.

Troopers were notified at 7:30 p.m. that Vincent Short had fallen and suffered significant injuries. He died shortly afterward, troopers said. Next of kin have been notified.

The U.S. Coast Guard has taken over the investigation, which remains open. The trooper dispatch does not describe how the fall occurred. Coast Guard marine casualty investigations typically identify the initiating event and examine causal factors such as safety procedures and equipment use after a death aboard a vessel.
