Seth Whiteman, 22, dead after going overboard near Egegik Bay

A 22-year-old Eagle River man is dead after going overboard near Egegik Bay on June 29, his body recovered from a nearby beach nearly two weeks later.

Alaska Wildlife Troopers recovered the remains at about 6 p.m. on July 11 and identified them as Seth Whiteman. Next of kin have been notified.

The Search

Troopers were already on the water, patrolling aboard the P/V Stimpson just southeast of Egegik Bay, when a man-overboard call came over marine radio channel 16 at 4:20 p.m. on June 29. Wildlife Troopers responded with two skiffs, a helicopter, and an airplane, and the U.S. Coast Guard joined the search. After seven hours, the Coast Guard suspended the operation at 11:36 p.m., pending new information.

Whiteman was reportedly not wearing a life jacket. Conditions at the time included 17 mph winds gusting to 28 mph, five-foot seas, and seven miles of visibility.
