One person died Thursday in a fire in a string of units at a gated condominium complex in Midtown Anchorage, the Anchorage Fire Department said. Firefighters found the person dead in one of the condos.

Calls poured in to 911 Thursday morning as a large plume of smoke rose above the buildings. Fire command called a second alarm, and 31 fire department units responded.

While firefighters laid hose, police officers went door to door to clear the complex. "APD officers banged on doors hollering for residents to evacuate," the fire department wrote.

The department has not identified the person who died. Anchorage police will investigate the death, and fire department investigators and inspectors are working to find the fire's origin and cause.

The department did not give the address or the name of the complex. It has not said how many units burned, whether anyone else was hurt or how many residents are out of their homes.

Residential fires killed 14 people in Alaska in 2025, according to the proclamation Gov. Mike Dunleavy signed naming October Fire Prevention Month, Alaska News reported Oct. 1. Fifty-three percent of those deaths came in properties with no smoke alarms installed.
