Prince of Wales heat advisory ends after temperatures reach the 80s

It reached 82 degrees on Prince of Wales Island on Friday, warm enough that the National Weather Service put the island under a heat advisory and cautioned that people "not accustomed to these unusually hot temperatures for this region" could get sick from it.

The advisory ran into the evening and lifted once the sun went down. Inland spots away from the water ran the warmest.

Forecasters told people to drink plenty of fluids, keep curtains closed through the day, open windows at night, run fans, and use community buildings with air conditioning.

About 5,800 people live in the Prince of Wales-Hyder Census Area, according to state Labor Department estimates for this year, spread across Craig, Klawock, Thorne Bay, Hydaburg, Coffman Cove, Kasaan and smaller places.

Saturday should come in mostly clear, with highs between 70 and 76. Rain is likely Tuesday night.
