Norton Sound's health corporation is in line for $7.2 million
Norton Sound Health Corporation is set to receive about $7.2 million across seven projects under a new federal rural health program, according to preliminary notices from the state health department. The amounts hold until grant agreements are signed.
Most of it, nearly $5 million, would replace end-of-life computers, servers and networks across the region's 15 village clinics.
Those clinics serve communities of roughly 90 to 835 people, none of them on a road. Patients reach care by small plane, boat or snowmachine, and specialty care can mean a 538-mile flight to Anchorage. The corporation's own needs assessment documents patients stranded when flights land in Nome after hours with no way to get from the airport to the hospital.
Another $292,006 would build a centralized scheduling hub, staffed by four cross-trained schedulers, tying together appointments at all 15 village clinics, the Nome Family Medicine clinic and Norton Sound Regional Hospital. The state says the setup would let a patient book across facilities in a single phone call.
The rest covers remote monitoring for 500 high-risk patients, care navigation, behavioral health integration, cardiac diagnostics and maternal and neonatal equipment.
Alaska's first-year share of the federal program is $272.2 million, part of a five-year, $50 billion national effort. Year 1 money has to be spent by the end of September 2027.
