Alaska pauses weekly rural health awards with $207 million of $272 million announced

Alaska has announced $207 million of its $272.2 million first-year rural health award, across 217 projects as of Sept. 4, none this week. The Alaska Department of Health said the rest are expected in coming weeks as review and processing conclude, pausing a weekly schedule begun Aug. 7.

Figures are projected pending subaward budget finalization, the setting of project budgets, each a notice of intent, not a completed award. Of 1,800 letters of interest, 431 were invited to apply. Congress created it in 2025. The money comes from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Year 1 funds must be obligated by Oct. 30 and spent by Sept. 30, 2027, or be recaptured, taken back by the federal government.

A department webinar Friday, 2 to 3 p.m., covers Year 1 reflections and Year 2 planning; registration required. Deputy Commissioner Emily Ricci told the advisory council, "we cannot repeat what we did this last year from a sustainability perspective."
