Nearly all of the $1.84 billion in new federal awards to Alaska is health money
Federal agencies have awarded $1.84 billion to Alaska recipients in the first three weeks of the federal fiscal year, which began Oct. 1, and nearly all of it is for health care, according to USAspending.gov data pulled Wednesday.
The Department of Health and Human Services accounts for $1.83 billion. The largest share, $1.05 billion, is in Indian Health Service tribal self-governance compacts and funding agreements, under which tribal organizations run health programs the Indian Health Service would otherwise operate. Another $718 million is in Medicaid grants to the state.
The largest recipients are the Alaska Department of Health ($766 million), the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corp. ($207 million), the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium ($162 million), Southcentral Foundation ($149 million) and the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium ($121 million).
The total was $20.48 million on Oct. 12, according to an earlier Alaska News snapshot of the site. The figures reflect money awarded, not yet paid out. USAspending shows no outlays so far.
The $1.84 billion covers 259 awards: $1.06 billion in direct payments across 33 awards, $774 million in grants across 101, and about $7.3 million in 123 contracts. The data excludes subawards, the portion of funding recipients pass along to other organizations.
