Mat-Su forum tackles housing for after parents are gone

A question hangs over many families raising a disabled adult: what happens to my child when I no longer can care for them. Hope Community Resources will lay out one answer Thursday in Wasilla.

The nonprofit is proposing Ptarmigan Commons, a housing community in the Mat-Su for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The design is small on purpose, three to four homes of three to four residents each, so people can age in place among neighbors while support services, potentially funded through Medicaid waivers, stay separate from the housing itself. It would be Hope's third such community.

The free forum runs 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at the Mat-Su Health Foundation, 777 N. Crusey St., with time set aside for families to weigh in. Everything known about the plan so far comes from Hope; no independent review has been done.
