Mat-Su officers arrest two inmates on contraband warrants

Court Services Officers arrested two men on outstanding contraband warrants at separate correctional facilities within 24 hours. Both men were already in custody on unrelated charges.

Cody Lloyd Ives, 41, of Big Lake, was arrested Sunday at Mat-Su Pretrial Facility in Palmer on a warrant for Promoting Contraband in the First Degree. Orion Seal, 42, of Wasilla, was arrested Monday at Goose Creek Correctional Center in Wasilla on the same charge. Bail for both warrants was set at $500 cash performance.

Promoting Contraband in the First Degree is a class C felony in Alaska. The charge covers the introduction or provision of controlled substances, weapons, or other specified contraband into correctional facilities.

Both Goose Creek Correctional Center and the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility are part of the Alaska Department of Corrections' Central Region. The region groups facilities in Southcentral Alaska, including those serving the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.

Alaska sentencing law provides that when an offender commits a new crime while serving a term of imprisonment, any new sentence generally must run consecutively to the existing term. That creates additional exposure for in-custody offenses like promoting contraband.

Charges reported are merely accusations. The defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
