Kwigillingok, Kongiganak forecast for highest water in surf advisory
The National Weather Service in Anchorage issued a high surf advisory Friday for the Kuskokwim Delta Coast and Nunivak Island, in effect through the afternoon. Forecasters expected water as high as 1 to 2 feet above the normal highest tide line, with the highest levels in Kwigillingok and Kongiganak.
Forecasters warned of nuisance flooding in low-lying areas and possible coastal erosion. The advisory told residents to take precautions to protect property.
Strong south winds pushed water toward the coast and drove the high surf, forecasters said. Water levels were expected to trend lower starting with Friday's morning high tide, then dip below the mean higher high water mark by Saturday afternoon.
The same two villages were named last month in a coastal flood advisory that forecast water 1.5 to 4 feet above the highest tide line.
