Kodiak Parks and Recreation Director Heather Bolen has proposed three possible first projects from the city's newly adopted parks master plan, giving the advisory board a starting point for discussion. The City of Kodiak Parks and Recreation Advisory Board takes them up at noon Tuesday, Oct. 13, at the Teen Center. The agenda calls for discussion only, not a vote. Bolen's report says staff want to focus on one project rather than spreading resources across several at once.

Gibson Cove

The city owns a 5.8-acre former industrial lot at Gibson Cove that still holds a large pile of pipe. It sits next to Bureau of Land Management land, with Natives of Kodiak shoreline to the west. The plan calls for shelters, seating, picnic tables, barbecues and an accessible trail, once design work and rezoning are complete.

Wamwik Park and East Addition Park

At Wamwik Park, the option is to renovate or replace the bleachers, which the plan rates in poor condition. At East Addition Park on Simeonoff Street, the plan calls for drainage fixes at the dog park and ballfield, a renovated concession building and a study of artificial turf.

The plan does not put a cost on any of the three projects. The parks department's yearly budget is $1.96 million, plus up to $500,000 a year in sales tax revenue set aside for park projects.

The meeting is open to the public, with testimony limited to three minutes per speaker.
