Klehini River flows elevated near Klukwan as snowmelt continues in Chilkat Valley

High snowmelt is pushing elevated stream flow across the Chilkat River Valley. The National Weather Service in Juneau issued a Special Weather Statement covering Haines Borough and Klukwan, rated Moderate severity with Expected urgency and Observed certainty.

The statement runs until 8 PM AKDT Monday. NWS Juneau cautioned that "snow levels in excess of 5000 ft will continue to support additional runoff entering the Chilkat River Valley, maintaining elevated stream flow," indicating conditions will persist beyond the statement's expiration.

The Klehini River measured 86.9 feet at 11 AM Monday. Flow rates have exceeded 6,000 KCFS at times. Temperatures are expected to cool through the coming week, which will slow the melt rate, but the high-elevation snowpack means elevated flows in the Klehini and connected waterways across the valley will not drop quickly.
