King salmon fishing stays closed across the Tanana drainage

Sport fishing for king salmon stays closed across the Tanana River drainage — the Chena, Salcha, Goodpaster and mainstem Tanana — with no change in Fish and Game's latest report. The closure, in place since February and running through Sept. 30, followed a below-average Yukon king forecast; the run isn't expected to meet its escapement goals, and any king hooked by accident must be released in the water.

Yukon king stocks remain at historically low productivity, and the Salcha and Chena rivers have missed their escapement goals six years running.

With kings off the table, the department points anglers toward what's biting. Arctic grayling are on their summer grounds taking dry flies and small lures; northern pike are hitting big, flashy spoons and topwater at Minto Flats, Harding Lake and Tanana sloughs; burbot fishing should improve as the water cools; and fall stocking of lakes begins once the weather turns.
