Kids get the Homer Spit's prime fishing spot for a day

Kids get the best fishing hole on the Homer Spit to themselves this Saturday.

For the day, the stretch of the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon across from the entrance — the lagoon's most productive water — is reserved for anglers 15 and younger. Adults can't fish it; the rest of the lagoon stays open to everyone. Fish and Game staff will be on hand from 2 to 5 p.m. to help kids hook coho, with loaner rods available first come, first served.

Not everyone loves it. Some Homer-area and visiting anglers have grumbled that handing over the hottest section for a full day cuts adults out during a short, tightly managed salmon season.

It happens twice a summer, the first Saturdays in June and August, with volunteers also teaching casting, knots, and fish biology. Kids 15 and under need no fishing license, just a harvest record card.
