Filing deadline nears for Kodiak's October election, with an Assembly seat already open

Kodiak Island Borough residents have until 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, to get their names on the October ballot, with seats open on the Borough Assembly, the School Board and the borough's local service area boards ahead of the Oct. 6 election. Filing runs weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Borough Clerk's Office through the Aug. 17 deadline.

One Assembly seat has sat vacant since June 25, when Dave Johnson's resignation took effect; the Assembly interviewed four applicants for the appointed seat, which expires in October.

Candidates for Assembly and School Board must be qualified borough voters who have lived in the borough for a year at the time of filing. Service area board candidates need at least 30 days' residency in their area. Every candidate files an Alaska Public Offices Commission financial disclosure statement along with the declaration of candidacy. Residents who miss Monday's deadline can still run as write-in candidates.
