Driver escapes uninjured after vehicle overturns and burns on Steese Highway in Fox

A driver walked away uninjured after a vehicle overturned and caught fire on the Steese Highway in Fox late Saturday, Aug. 8, Alaska State Troopers said.

Troopers responded at about 11:50 p.m. to the area of 2110 Steese Highway for a single-vehicle collision reported as an overturned vehicle on fire.

The driver struck the shoulder while avoiding another vehicle that had drifted into the lane, then overcorrected, according to the trooper investigation. The driver showed no signs of intoxication, was not injured and declined medical transport. Troopers filed no charges.

The account comes only from troopers. No other party is quoted in the report, and it does not say whether the second vehicle or its driver was identified.

The stretch of the Steese Highway serving Fox and Fairbanks has drawn repeated trooper responses this summer. On July 20, troopers reported an injury collision at Steese Highway and Halgebarger Avenue in which occupants of both vehicles suffered minor injuries; troopers ruled out alcohol and drugs. A June 20 collision near Steese Highway and Fairhill Road left three passengers injured and led to DUI and assault charges against the driver.
