Dozens of earthquakes struck one patch of seafloor near Nikolski

Thirty-four earthquakes hit the seafloor southwest of Nikolski, in the Aleutians, between Monday evening and late Tuesday, nearly all of them in the same stretch of ocean floor roughly 85 to 115 kilometers from the village. Nine came within two hours Tuesday night.

The largest were a pair of magnitude 5.2 to 5.3 shocks, one late Monday and one at 9:14 pm Tuesday. Three people reported feeling the Monday quake.

The National Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami danger, in a statement issued eight minutes after the Monday shock.

Alaska is building an earthquake early warning system, but not for this part of the state. The first phase of the ShakeAlert expansion, which the Alaska Earthquake Center is developing with the U.S. Geological Survey, covers Anchorage, Fairbanks, Kodiak and Prince William Sound, where about 90 percent of Alaskans live. It is years from operating and depends on continued funding. The Aleutians are not included.
