Dorothy Grant retrospective at Alaska State Museum closes Oct. 17
Admission to Juneau's Alaska State Museum is free from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, for Indigenous Peoples Day. It marks one of the last chances to see the Dorothy Grant retrospective. Regular admission is $9 for adults and $8 for seniors 65 and older. Winter hours run Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The show closes Oct. 17, but all division facilities close that day for the state holiday. Friday, Oct. 16, is the last day to see it. The museum stays closed Oct. 18.
"Dorothy Grant Retrospect: Raven Comes Full Circle" spans Grant's 40-year career in more than 40 pieces, ranging from spruce-root weaving, button-robe work and regalia to haute couture. Grant, born in Hydaburg, belongs to the Haida Nation's Yahgw Janáas clan. The Haida Gwaii Museum organized the show, and Nika Collison curated it.
The Friends of the Alaska State Library, Archives, and Museum sponsored the loan of the "Raven Takes the World" Haida wedding dress, headdress and "Raven's Beak" shoes from the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian. Alaska News previously covered the exhibit's arrival.
CBC News reported in 2024 that Grant sees the work as a historical record and an inspiration for other Indigenous fashion designers.
