Dense fog advisories end across Southeast Alaska after quarter-mile visibility
Dense fog dropped visibility to a quarter mile or less across parts of Southeast Alaska early Thursday. All four advisories have since ended.
The National Weather Service in Juneau put out the first one late Wednesday night for Juneau, added Yakutat and the Petersburg Borough after midnight, and picked up Western Kupreanof and Kuiu Island by morning. Each warned that low visibility could make travel hazardous, and advised drivers to slow down, use headlights and leave room ahead.
Around midnight, FAA and 511 cameras showed the thickest of it along Egan Highway toward Juneau International Airport.
The last advisories came down midmorning. "Dense fog is beginning to thin, therefore the advisory has been allowed to expire," the office wrote, saying visibility would keep improving through the next few hours.
Fog is a recurring hazard in these communities, where getting anywhere often means a boat or a small plane.
