Gustavus and Glacier Bay fog advisory has expired; patchy fog forecast again overnight

Drivers and boaters around Gustavus and Glacier Bay saw visibility drop to a quarter mile or less through midday Tuesday, under a dense fog advisory NWS Juneau issued at 9:31 a.m. AKDT that expired at noon.

"Low visibility could make travel conditions hazardous," the advisory said. Forecasters told anyone traveling to slow down, turn on their lights and leave plenty of distance ahead.

Patchy fog also extended into Icy Strait toward Sisters Island, though the advisory said it was beginning to lift there. No watches, warnings or advisories are in effect for the area now.

The Glacier Bay zone forecast, updated at 9:05 a.m., called for "widespread dense fog in the morning." The Gustavus forecast issued Tuesday evening calls for patchy fog again between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., then rain showers after 7 a.m. Wednesday.

NOAA's Coast Pilot says navigation outside the main channels "is not considered safe without local knowledge."
