Crews are cutting firebreaks in the woods at the center of Anchorage

Crews are clearing brush along three trails in Campbell Tract this week, maintaining the fuel breaks meant to keep a wildfire from running out of the woods and into the neighborhoods around them.

Short segments of the Speedway, Viewpoint, and Moose Meadow trails are closed through July 25. The rest of the tract stays open.

The breaks are old, cut more than 20 years ago by the Bureau of Land Management and the municipality, but they only work if someone keeps the brush down.

Campbell Tract is 730 acres of real woods inside Alaska's largest city, drawing more than half a million visits a year. Last August, managers closed trails there for a different reason: the bears were too active.
