BLM closes Nome Creek road, trail for construction through August
Two summer-long closures will limit access to Nome Creek Valley, the main gateway to the White Mountains National Recreation Area, the Bureau of Land Management announced.
Nome Creek Road closes weekdays starting June 1 for culvert replacement and drainage work between the Nome Creek Bridge and Ophir Creek Campground, with the closure running through Sept. 30 or until work wraps up. The road stays open weekends, federal holidays, and Sept. 1–15 for moose season. Expect traffic controls and delays when it is open. BLM rangers will be in the area enforcing the restriction.
Nome Creek Trail closes July 6 through Aug. 31 for stream restoration work, with heavy equipment operating roughly 1.5 miles upstream of the bridge.
The closures cover the heart of the summer use season. Nome Creek Valley is one of the prime access points for summer recreation in the White Mountains, with two campgrounds, trails, a recreational gold-panning area, and the put-in for float trips on the Beaver Creek Wild and Scenic River. The valley sits about an hour from Fairbanks, reached via U.S. Creek Road off Steese Highway Milepost 57. Bureau of Land ManagementBureau of Land Management
